LASER / LIGHT-BASED HAIR REMOVAL TREATMENT FAQs
What happens during treatment?
The night before the treatment, the area to be treated must be clean-shaved. Some patients may need numbing cream for the area to be treated. Numbing cream helps when a small area to be treated is very sensitive. It takes about 30 to 60 minutes for a numbing cream to work.
At the treatment room both Esthetician/Technician and patient will wear protective eyewear during the procedure. Many patients will experience laser pulses feeling like warm pinpricks or a rubber band being snapped against the skin.
We use a hair removal machine that has a revolutionary cooling system, controlled and monitored in order to ensure comfortable treatment to the patient. It’s cooling system "freeze" the skin so that during the treatment the skin temperature will rise to a bearable level. As well, this light-based hair removal machine has a special patented optical technique that focuses the light energy under the skin level and not on the surface of the skin, resulting in heating the hair follicles.
How long does each treatment last?
It depends on the size of the area being treated. As an example, treating the upper lip takes a minute or two. If you have a large area like the back or legs treated, each treatment may last between 15 and 30 minutes.
What must I do after getting a treatment?
To avoid possible side effects, all patients need to protect their skin from the sun. After each laser hair removal and during the whole period of treatments, you must:
• Avoid direct sunlight from hitting your treated area.
• Not use a tanning bed, sun lamp, or any other indoor tanning equipment.
• Avoid contact with salt water, swimming pools, sweating activities or physical exertion
• Follow your Esthetician/Technician’s after-care instructions.
In some cases, you will see some redness and swelling after treatment. This often looks like a mild sunburn. Applying a cool compress like an aloe vera gel can help reduce discomfort.
Is there any downtime?
No, laser hair removal generally does not require any real downtime. Immediately after having laser hair removal, your treated area may sometimes show redness. Despite this, most people return to their everyday activities.
When is it safe to have another treatment?
This varies from patient to patient. Removing hair often requires a series of laser treatments. Most patients can have laser hair removal once every 4 to 6 weeks. Our Esthetician/Technician will tell you when it is appropriate to have another treatment.
In some cases, patients may see some hair regrowth. Our Esthetician/Technician can tell you when you can safely have laser treatments to maintain desired results.
How many treatments do I need for laser hair removal treatment?
We recommend anywhere from three to eight treatments on average depending on the area. You can only permanently reduce hair in the antagen (active) phase of hair growth and only a small percent of hair is active at any given time. Your treatments will be spaced out every four to six weeks depending on area being treated.
When will I see the results after having completed treatment?
The results vary from patient to patient. The color and density of your hair, area treated, and color of your skin all affect the results. In some cases, you can expect thinning and 5% to 10% reduction in hair after the first treatment.
To remove the hair, most patients need a minimum of 6 sessions. After completing the suggested number of treatments, most patients do not see any hair on the treated skin for several months or even years. When the hair regrows, there tends to be less of it. The hair also tends to be finer and lighter in color. To keep the area free of hair, a patient may need regular maintenance or touch-up treatments.
Have there been any technological advances on laser hair removal treatments?
Lasers or light-based technology machines play an important role in treating many conditions that affect the skin and hair. In recent years, many advances have been made. One such advance is that more people can now safely and effectively have laser hair removal. In the past, only people with dark hair and light skin could have laser hair removal.
Today, laser hair removal is a treatment option for patients with light-colored hair and light skin, as well as patients with dark skin. Laser hair removal must be performed very carefully in these patients. Our Estheticians/Technicians know what precautions to take to provide laser hair removal safely and effectively.
